Background
in substantial land loss and reduced bank stability, adversely impacting nearby villages by damaging residential structures,
road networks, and agricultural land.
Earlier erosion control measures such as stone pitching and earthen embankments proved inadequate against the river’s high
velocity and strong hydraulic forces. These conventional solutions were unable to provide long-term resilience and protection
under extreme flow conditions.
The client L&T was seeking a robust and reliable solution to safeguard bridge abutment from scouring and erosion. The primary
concern was the potential structural damage that could compromise the bridge’s stability and safety. L&T required an effective
intervention that would ensure long-term protection, structural integrity, and reduced maintenance under dynamic river
conditions. Hence, Geoquest India was awarded to Provide Technology assistance for the Project.

Challenge
Sudden Fluctuations in Water Levels: Unanticipated rises in river water levels posed significant challenges to site accessibility,
operational continuity, and overall safety.
Underwater Construction Constraints: Execution of concrete works below water level was complicated by strong river currents,
affecting placement accuracy and quality control.
Management of Concrete Grout Flow: Ensuring a uniform, continuous, and controlled flow of concrete grout during underwater
placement proved technically demanding.
Adverse and Unpredictable Weather: Extreme and rapidly changing weather conditions disrupted construction schedules and
heightened on site safety risks.
Limited Equipment Accessibility: Restricted working space hindered the positioning and operation of concrete boom pump trucks,
leading to intermittent construction delays.
Enhanced Worker Safety Risks: Difficult site conditions, including high water levels and constrained access, increased risk exposure
for the workforce, necessitating stringent safety measures.
Execution on Steep and Unstable Slopes: Construction activities on inclined terrain presented both technical difficulties and elevated
safety concerns.
Compressed Schedule Due to Monsoon Onset: A tight project timeline, compounded by the impending monsoon season, increased
the risk of schedule overruns and required accelerated execution.
Obstruction from Deposited Silt: Accumulation of silt over the revetment mattress caused surface irregularities, obstructing works
and complicating underwater concrete casting operations.

Solution
TechRevetment® is a fabric formed concrete mattress made of durable synthetic fabric stitched into interconnected, pillow shaped
compartments. These compartments are filled with flowing concrete grout through integrated ducts, forming a stable mattress of
interlocked concrete blocks upon curing.
During sudden rises in water levels, certified professional divers equipped with full safety gear were deployed to carry out
underwater inspections and execution. Riverbed slopes were manually verified using ropes, while required cutting or filling was
supported using machinery and sandbags.
Due to the presence of well compacted river sand, driving rods initially bent during anchor installation. To overcome this, pre
excavation using buckets was carried out to loosen the strata, and a reinforced driving rod fabricated by welding three 32 mm steel
rods was introduced, ensuring smooth and effective terra anchor installation
Key Benefits Achieved:
▪ Effective soil erosion control along bridge abutments and piers in flowing river conditions
▪ Scour prevention and repair through apron launching
▪ Improved river channelization ensuring controlled flow
The project was completed with zero recordable injuries, reflecting Geoquest India’s strong safety culture and disciplined execution.
Despite a highly compressed timeline due to the approaching monsoon, meticulous planning and precise execution enabled on
time completion before the rainy season-an achievement that was highly appreciated by the client.
